Overview

What we do, and why it matters

Most of the WordPress sites that reach us were built by somebody who has since moved on to other work. The site still runs, but nobody left knows which plugins it depends on, what was changed inside the theme, or what was edited directly on the server and will disappear at the next update. So we read it first, and you get a plain account of its condition before anything is changed.

A WooCommerce store selling from Massachusetts has a tax setup to get right as well. The state rate is 6.25%, but clothing and footwear are exempt up to $175 of each item's price. A $40 shirt isn't taxed at all, and a $200 coat is taxed on $25 of it. WooCommerce's built-in tax settings apply a flat rate per tax class, so that rule needs either custom code or a tax service that knows about the exemption. Then there's the sales tax holiday, a weekend in August set each year by the legislature, when most items up to $2,500 are tax-free. Meals, alcohol, tobacco, and vehicles stay taxed.

Your accountant decides what's taxable for your business. Our part is making the store apply it, testing it with sample orders, and making sure the holiday switches on and off on the right weekend.

We're on Eastern time, Emyrix is a US company on a US contract, and when it helps to go through a site with the people who use it every day, most of Massachusetts is a drive.

Services

What's included

Taking over an existing WordPress site

We get the access sorted out, read the theme and plugins, deal with what's urgent, and give you a plan you can put a budget against. You don't have to agree to a rebuild to get help.

WooCommerce tax setup for Massachusetts

The clothing exemption, product tax classes, and the August holiday handled in the store itself or through a tax service, then checked against test orders before customers see it.

Custom themes and plugins

Themes built for the site you have, with editor fields where your team needs them, and plugins built properly when no maintained plugin does the job. Version controlled and documented.

WooCommerce development

Payments, shipping, subscriptions, custom checkout and order flows, and the ERP or fulfillment system on the other end of the order.

Speed, security, and updates

Slow pages measured before anything changes, core and plugin updates applied and tested, logins and admin access hardened, and hacked sites cleaned up along with whatever let the attacker in.

Ongoing maintenance

Updates, backups that get checked, monitoring, and a queue of small improvements, on a retainer or when you need us.

Why Emyrix

What you get working with us

Engineering before another plugin

WordPress is PHP, and PHP is what we do. We look at the code to find out what's actually wrong before reaching for another plugin to cover it up.

Tax rules checked at the source

The Massachusetts rules on this page come from the state's own statutes, and a store's tax setup gets tested with sample orders before it goes live.

Eastern time, US contract

Emyrix LLC is registered in Massachusetts. Your working hours, a domestic contract, and invoices in dollars.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How should a WooCommerce store charge Massachusetts sales tax on clothing?

Clothing and footwear are exempt up to $175 of each item's price, and the state's 6.25% applies only to the amount above that. Clothing designed for sport or protection and not normally worn otherwise doesn't qualify. WooCommerce's built-in settings apply one rate per tax class and can't express a threshold like that, so it takes custom code or a tax service. Confirm with your accountant which of your products count as clothing.

Can WooCommerce handle the Massachusetts sales tax holiday?

Yes, with some setup. The holiday is a Saturday and Sunday in August, set each year by the legislature, and covers most items priced up to $2,500. Meals, alcohol, tobacco, and vehicles are excluded. The store needs a way to stop charging tax on eligible items for exactly those two days and start again afterwards, tested before the weekend arrives.

Can you take over a WordPress site built by somebody else?

Yes, and it's where most of this work starts. We get the access sorted out first, then read the theme, the plugins, and anything customized, and tell you honestly what condition the site is in. Urgent problems get dealt with first, and a rebuild isn't a condition of getting help.

Do you meet clients in person?

When it's useful. Emyrix LLC is registered in Massachusetts and works remotely, with no walk-in office. A kickoff, a launch, or going through a site with the people who edit it are the meetings worth having in person, and most of the state is a drive.

Do you only work with WordPress sites in Massachusetts?

No. We work with businesses across the United States. The tax setup on this page only matters for stores that collect Massachusetts sales tax.
